Railways, which had long been neglected in Turkey, reclaim their significance once more with the new investments that are being made in recent years. In correlation with growing demand for transportation, the need for high-speed railway lines and for bridges and viaducts, which constitute integral components of railways, increases by the day. In many European states, there are railways that can reach high speeds like 250-300 km/h, or more. Due to increased speed and axle weight, braking and traction effects generate substantial lateral forces on railway bridges. Moreover, heating is another factor that causes lateral forces. When they exceed permitted limits, these forces cause distortion in rail geometry, rendering the rail unable to fulfill its function, which may have very serious consequences like derailing. This study examines the interaction between the track (rail) and the bridge pursuant to UIC [1] and Eurocode [2] specifications in the example of a particular bridge, contemplated to be built on the Sivas-Erzincan high-speed railway line, which is currently at project preparation stage.
